Fraction Kit Activities

Make a game cube with the following fractions written one on each side:

Activity 1: Cover the Red

1. Use the fraction game cube and fraction kits. Each person needs his or her own fraction kit.

2. Starting with the red as the whole, take turns tossing the cube and placing the corresponding piece on the red sheet.

3. Continue doing this until the red sheet is covered exactly (with no overlap).

4. While covering, exchanges must be made for a bigger color if this can be done. For example, if you toss 1⁄16 on each of your first two turns, you must exchange 2⁄16, or two greens, in for ⅛, or one yellow. You will continue doing this until your board is covered with another red piece.

5. If a toss cannot be carried out, then toss again.

6. If playing with more than one person, the first person to cover the red with another red is the winner.

Activity 2: Uncover the Red

1. Begin with one red covering the other red whole game board.

2. Toss the fraction cube and remove the amount that is tossed. Exchanges must be made to remove the exact amount. For example, if you toss ¼ on your first turn, you must exchange a blue for two oranges then remove one orange.

3. Continue doing this until the red sheet is uncovered.

4. If a toss cannot be carried out, then toss again.
